“The Eyes Have It”

“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light….If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.” Luke 11:34a, 36 NLT

My dad had the most beautiful blue eyes — eyes that sparkled in the light. Although my eyes aren’t as blue as his, when I look at my eyes, I see the eyes of my father. I can never deny being Joe Hanna’s daughter! More than having the eyes of my earthly father, I want to have the eyes of my Heavenly Father. I’ve prayed many times to have His eyes — eyes to see people as He sees them; eyes to see the best in people and not the worst; eyes to see what people can become, not what they may be at this moment. Last night, though, as I went to bed, the thought crossed my mind — and I am certain that thought came from the Lord — “what do other people see when they look in my eyes?” When I meet someone for the first time, I notice two distinct things about them — their smile and their eyes. I don’t look at their clothes first. I don’t look at their posture. I don’t look at their hair. I look at their smile and their eyes. From those two things, I can tell a lot about a person. As I pondered this question in my heart from the Lord, I realized why God laid that in my spirit. When people look at me, do they see the eyes of Jesus reflected in me? I thought about that as I drifted off to sleep, and I woke up with that same thought in my heart. As I picture the eyes of Jesus, I see immense kindness; I see mercy and grace; I see compassion; and I see love. When people look into my eyes, is that what they see? Those are the characteristics I want them to see. I want them to see the eyes of my heavenly father! I want them to see Jesus, and I want them to sense His Presence. I want to look upon people with compassion, and kindness, and grace, and mercy, and most of all love, just as Jesus would! When people see my eyes, I want them to say “Surely, this is a child of God….she has His eyes!!” Is that your prayer this morning??

“The Lord will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; her will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.” Isaiah 51:3 NIV

“The precepts of the Lord are right giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes” Psalm 19:8 NIV

“You gave me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence watched over my spirit” Job 10:12 NIV

“But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared,” Titus 3:4 KJV

“So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.” Exodus 2:25 NIV

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” Lamentations 3:21-24
